Emily Wilson, British classicist and Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Pennsylvania, is the first woman to translate The Odyssey into English.
The Odyssey is the story of the Greek Hero Odysseus. On his way home from the Trojan War he faces several adventures on the way and uses his cunning to overcome his obstacles and outsmart his foes. For some he is a model hero by some, but for a few flaws, he would not be considered so under a modern lens.
Sexism is a main criticism of The Odyssey . Both Odysseus’s attitude and his double standards of acceptable behaviour for the sexes shows a bleak world for women to live in. It would be interesting to see how it has interpreted from a woman’s point of view.
