Renowned Malayalam poet and translator Attoor Ravi Varma passed away on 26 July 2019. Named affectionately after the village of his birth, he is the winner of several top honours, including the Sahitya Akademi for poetry as well as translation, the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award and the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram and the Assan Prize.
Born in Thrissur on December 27, 1930, he started his career as a college professor after his postgraduation in Malayalam. He is the pioneer among the group of poets who introduceed modernism in Malayalam poetry. His poems ignored the metre and used free verse. Some of his works include Attor Kavithakal, Randam Yamangalude Kadha, Oru pulimarathinte Kadha to name a few. Kerala Sahitya Akademi inducted him as their distinguished fellow in 2017.
