Victor Hugo was born on 26th February 1802 in France. One of the noted French Romantic writer he is regarded as the country’s greatest poet. He is known worldwide for his novels, Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) and Les Misérables.
His first novel was, Han d’Islande, which was translated to English as Hans of Iceland. Known for his intense poems densely packed with imagery his writings offered a sense of hope. In Les Misérables he says, “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.”
He was interested in politics and a believer in European integration. He was elected to the National Assembly in 1871. He died at the age of 83 on May 22, 1883.
