Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian author born on 24 August, 1947 in Rio de Janeiro. He started his career as a theatre director and actor, lyricist and journalist before switching completely to literature.
In 1986, he did the pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella, an experience later to be documented in his book The Pilgrimage. In the following year, he published The Alchemist.
