International chess day is celebrated annually on July 20 since 1966, as proposed by UNESCO. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded on this day. The FIDE was established in 1924 on this day. It became the first institution, that united chess federations of different countries. Alexander Rueb, a Dutch lawyer and diplomat, became its first president.
FIDE has 181 chess federations as its members. It organises chess events and competitions around the world on this day. Chaturanga was introduced in India in the 6th century as an Arabic game. It was played on 8×8 board that featured 16 pieces on each side. This is said to be the only board game that identified with modern chess.
Indian player Viswanathan Anand, who is a grand master and a five-time world champion, has made the country proud in many tournaments until another Norwegian champion Magnus Carlsen came into the world of chess.He defeated Anand in 2013 and became the world chess champion.
