In 1895 Hardy through his final novel sent waves of indignation across Victorian England. Hardy daringly and frankly wrote about sexuality and he accused the institutions of marriage, education, and religion. But what Hardy actually did was he created an intense moral work.
The stonemason Jude Fawley is a dreamer but completely dull with unfulfilled aims. With his failed first marriage he falls in love with his tantalizing cousin Sue Bridehead. But when she marries a school teacher Jude is again immersed in loneliness and sadness. Later Sue with the permission of her husband she starts to live with her lover. They lived considering the institution of marriage as silly. But tragic events change her. And what left for Jude is nothing but eternal sleep.
Jude The Obscure is a profound exploration of man’s essential loneliness.
