Currently the director of the creative writing program at Princeton University, Tracy K. Smith already has decades of experience in being a poet.
The Library of Congress has named Ms. Smith its new poet laureate which is America’s highest honour in the field of poetry.
Ms. Smith is the 22nd poet to take on the position, officially titled Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. This position was previously held by the poets Rita Dove, Louise Gluck, Billy Collins, W. S. Merwin, Charles Simic and most recently, Juan Felipe Herrera.
Tracy Smith responded to the honour saying that she planned to use the position to be a literary evangelist of sorts, by visiting small towns and rural areas to hold poetry events.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity to take what I consider to be the good news of poetry to parts of the country where literary festivals don’t always go,Poetry is something that’s relevant to everyone’s life, whether they’re habitual readers of poetry or not.” Smith said.
Her work has constantly been awarded, she even won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2012 for Life on Mars , her collection of poems filled with science fiction and dystopian themes.
