What if wishes could come true? What if something you really and truly need could come true if you wished for it … and believed.
Its holiday time for Priti and her brother Aditya, a.k.a. Ditto who always wants to do what she does. A fair comes up in the playground next to their colony and Priti and Ditto, armed with pocket money from Grandma, go out to enjoy it.
While there, they come across a stall – or something like it – having only a barrel with the notice: ‘You Wish For It, You Get It.’ A stern, unsmiling man dressed like a wizard with a big multi-coloured hat and black cape stands next to the barrel, holding a stick that looks like a magic wand. He asks them whether they want to make their wishes come true. Soon, they are joined by their schoolmates Roly, who often fought with Priti over seats in the bus, and Mini, her ‘surly’ class monitor.
When Roly and Ditto decide to try out the wishing barrel, Mini and Priti, though unsure, join too. The clown-magician tells them to wish for something they really and truly need, throw a coin into the barrel and pick a package. They do so and each end up with differently shaped, gaily wrapped packages.
What do their packages contain? Do they get what they wished for or do their gifts make them realise what they really and truly need?
Cheryl Rao’s new book, Lucky Dip! is as enjoyable as a chance at the wishing-barrel stall, where surprises are waiting!
