The previous editions of Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) have been without doubt India’s finest celebration of theatre. A weeklong theatre festival and awards ceremony, which stages the best in theatre from across the country. With the aim of reviving this dwindling art form, the festival is providing a platform for performers from across the country to showcase their piece of work. META recognizes theatre’s varied elements like playwriting, set, costume and light designing, direction and performance.
This fourteenth edition will see as many as 10 plays from over 400 productions shortlisted for the awards which will be staged from the 6th-11th March 2019 at Kanmani auditorium and Shri Ram Centre, New Delhi. This year’s final nominations feature plays in Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, along with Hindi and English language scripts. The festival is noted for its diversity spanning a cross-section of India exploring several themes.
Chillara Samaram and Pulijanmam are the two Malayalam plays among the ones selected. The latter is a reinterpretation of a classic text which questions the morals of a society which has long marginalized Dalits.
The jury for this year includes renowned theatre artist, actor and screenwriter Akash Khurana, a popular actress and singer Ila Arun, actor Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and dance historian Sunil Kothari among others. The renowned Indian playwright Mahesh Elkunchwar has been chosen for this year’s META Lifetime Achievement Award which will be presented in the glamorous award night on the 12th of March.
