Nelson Mandela was held as a prisoner for about 27 long years and during this period he wrote hundreds of letters to his loved ones, followers, government officials, and prison authorities. These letters are about to be published.
Liveright Publishing, a division of W.W. Norton & Co., announced that it will publish Mandela’s extensive prison correspondence in two separate editions: one containing some 250 selected letters to be published in July 2018 aiming Mandela’s birth centenary. Another more comprehensive two-volume collection is to follow soon after.
Liveright acquired the rights to Mandela’s letters from the New Zealand-based publisher Blackwell & Ruth, which has a long association with Mandela and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
