The novel which portrays beautiful Mayyazhi in her forties is considered as one of the most significant masterpieces in Malayalam Literature.
He describes Mayyazhi as ‘a mélange of native myth and legend and shimmering French elegance. Wine flows through streets where horse drawn carriages speed by day and night. Folklore has it that souls hover as dragonflies over the Vellian Rock in the sea’.
The plot of the story is when a wave of nationalism sweeps over the town and a group of dedicated young men determined to free Mayyazhi from the French set the wheels in motion. Dasan, a promising young man destined for a brilliant career in the French government find himself in the thick of the movement. The writing is so raw that he captures the spirit of a period of transition in all its glory.
One of the pioneers of modernity in Malayalam literature, M.Mukundan is famed as ‘The story-teller of Mayyazhi’. His early works like ‘Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil’, ‘Daivathinte Vikrithikal’, ‘Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma’ and ‘Lesli Achante Kadangal’ featured his native village of Mayyazhi.
Mukundan has so far published around 12 novels and ten collections of short stories.
