Chilean poet Raul Zurita has been selected for this year’s Asan Viswa Kavitha Puraskaram. The award committee comprising of acclaimed poet K Sachithanandan, Sarah Joseph and M A Baby declared the winner at a news conference.
The award comprises Rs 5 lakh, plaque and citation will be presented to Zurita at a function at Kayikkara, the birthplace of Kumaran Asan, on April 29.
Zurita – a Chilean poet whose works include Purgatory, La Vida Nueva, INRI and Zurita – founded CADA (Colectivo de Acciones de Arte) – an art action group dedicated to the creation of public and political art as a resistance to Pinochet’s military dictatorship. Zurita has won the Chilean National Prize for Literature, is also known for his sky written poetry performance over New York in 1982 and for his poems inscribed in the sands of the Atacama Desert in 1992.
His books have been translated into English, German, Swedish, Bengali, Hindi, Chinese, Italian, Russian, Greek and Slovenian.
