For the indelible thoughts books leave us with, DC Books celebrated this year’s World Book Day with indelible art. Taking into account the influential role books hold in one’s life, World Book Day is celebrated in order to laud the books and authors who gifted us words that speak to us. Falling on the Birthdays of writers like William Shakespeare, the UNESCO decided to observe April 23rd as World Book and Copyright Day at a General Conference, held in Paris in 1995.
One’s favourite titles can never lose its charm no matter the umpteen times one reads it. You discover a new dimension each time you read the book and glee each time you see it. Taking this into account, the World Book Day celebrations this year by DC Books used the possibilities of graffiti art. An initiative that happened simultaneously at two venues on April 22nd featured prominent graffiti artist N.Ajayan. Alumni of Ravivarma Fine Arts College, Ajayan is known for his collective efforts in popularizing art through various initiatives. Curetted by the readers, the art featured the titles taking the shape of a bookshelf which could promote the idea of physical libraries that are fast disappearing from our homes. It would also introduce books that one is unaware of.
Though graffiti art generates a meaning only within the urban space, the book art campaign by DC Books will travel far and wide from the space it is confined to, with the #ReadABookToday campaign that is to follow. DC Books is organizing a refreshing contest in these times of digital dissemination to promote the spirit of reading.
Post a picture of the Book Art from either Trivandrum or Kottayam along with the hashtag #ReadABookToday, #DCBooks and #WorldBookDay2019, with a write-up of a book you read in not more than 150 words on Facebook or Instagram. Tag a friend in the post whom you’d like to recommend the book to.
The first five posts to reach 200 likes will be declared winners. The winners stand a chance to win gift vouchers worth 2000INR and a complimentary copy of the book will be shipped to the friend who has been tagged in the post. So Join the campaign and #ReadABookToday.
