The Last Color is an Indian feature film produced and directed by Indian-American Chef Vikas Khanna. The film is adapted from Khanna’s own book The Last Color published by Bloomsbury Publishing. Several students from Banaras Hindu University also worked as interns in this project.
The film features Neena Gupta as a widow in Benaras, where the story is set. The film addresses an age old taboo surrounding widows in Vrindavan and Varanasi in India. It deals with how a nine-year-old tightrope walker befriends one such widow and promises to add color to her life.
The Last Color invokes Tagore’s iconic poem, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high”, in the end. It is apt because escaping the life of an outcast is nothing but a triumph of the human spirit. It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
