A tragic, spiritual portrait of a perfect English butler and his reaction to his fading insular world in post-war England.
In the summer of 1956, Stevens, a long-serving butler at Darlington Hall, decides to take a motoring trip through the West Country. The six-day excursion has a deeper effect on him as he travels into the past of Stevens and England, a past that takes in fascism, two world wars, and an unrealized love between the butler and his housekeeper.
The novel was published originally in 1989 and had won Man Booker Prize in 1989. The Remains of the Day (1989), was turned into film with Anthony Hopkins as the butler Stevens. It is of no doubt that this novel made Ishiguro popular across the world.
