One Hell of a Lover by Unni R and Pulayathara by Paul Chirakkarode have been shortlisted for the Atta Galatta Bangalore Literature Festival Prize under fiction. The collection of nineteen short stories by Unni R has been translated from Malayalam by J.Devika. Paul Chirakkarode’s novel Pulayathara written in the backdrop of Dalit life in 1962 was translated in the same name by Catherine Thankamma.
Founded in 2015, the award is given out by Bangalore Literature Festival in conjunction with the city-based bookstore and art space Atta Galatta. The other books included in the shortlist for fiction are A Respectable Woman by Easterine Kire, Blue is Like Blue by Vinod Kumar Shukla, Looking for Miss Sargam by Shubha Mudgal and Heat by Poomani which is also a translation of a Tamil novel Vekkai published in 1982.
Early Indians by Tony Joseph, Gandhi, The years that changed the World by Ramachandra Guha, Listen To Me by Shashi Deshpande, Savarkar by Vikram Sampath, Tamil Characters: Personalities, Politics, Culture by A. R. Venkatachalapathy and Gene Machine by Venki Ramakrishnan are the shortlisted entries under the non-fiction category.
The prize will be announced on November 2, 2019.
